In 1966 in southern West Virginia, JANUARY McMILLION gets a visit from her cousin SARAH for the summer. Their parents think it will help keep January’s mind off her older brother, DANNY, who joined the army and has been deployed to Vietnam. The girls are sent to the attic after jelly jars. January doesn’t like the attic and wants to get the jars and come right back down, but Sarah wants to explore. January reluctantly stays and discovers a note in the McMillion’s attic written during the Civil War. She asks her mom, OLIVE, about the letter. Even though it’s usually not told to family members until they turn 13, she tells the soon-to-be 12-year-old cousins the family secret that has been passed down for generations. Over 100 years earlier, in 1863, DUDLEY, the girls’ 13-year-old ancestor, hid a chest from the union soldiers in a cave. He died of typhoid before the war ended and the chest has never been found. The girls want to search for it, but CHARLEY, January’s dad, forbids it. They become The Country Cousins Detective Agency to solve the mystery. Read more
