The materials in this book were originally collected, developed, and written for teaching a 3-credit class to Junior, senior and graduate students at Michigan State University (MSU). The class was offered three times per week for 12 weeks. The class structure consisted of lectures, homework, and field trips, biweekly quizzes, and two tests. At the end of each semester, the materials were modified to reflect students’ comments.Later, the materials were modified and condensed for a short two-day course that was offered twice a year for practicing engineers. More than 25 engineers attended each session. Once again, their comments and inputs helped the author to improve the materials to better address the existing state of the practice. In 1992, the National Highway Institute (NHI) of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Washington, D.C., sponsored the development of materials for a four-week short course. The materials were developed by Dr. Gilbert Baladi and two of his colleagues Dr. Mark Snyder and the late Dr. Frank McKelvey. The materials were housed in a three volumes book titled “Highway Pavements”. NHI printed and distributed the materials to SHAs and some private industry. The book “Highway Materials” addresses several topics including:Road History.Pavement Statistics.Pavement Distresses and their Causes.Distress Data Collection and Analyses.Pavement Design.Pavement Preservation.Pavement Management. The four-week short course was offered on MSU campus twice a year for three years and was attended by more than 200 practicing engineers from State Highway Agencies (SHAs) and the private sector. The World Bank sponsored one additional session that was attended by twenty-seven practicing engineers from twenty-five countries. The comments made by the practicing engineers’ course attendees helped to improve the materials and make it more practical.Short versions of some parts of the materials were also developed for a half day seminar offered to more than twenty SHAs and private sector. Finally, some of the materials, such as pavement design, pavement preservation, and pavement management were restructured for a two-day short courses. Each short course was offered more than ten times. On average, each offering was attended by 25 practicing engineers from SHAs and private sectors. After forty-two years of teaching and research at MSU, the author retired. He slowly modified the materials to be offered for publication. The first part. “A Brief History of Roads and Human” is published. This book addresses pavement types and construction steps, distresses and their causes, and distress data analyses. The book consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 – Pavement Types and Construction Steps.Chapter 2 – Asphalt Surfaced Pavement Distress and Preservation Options.Chapter 3 – Concrete Surfaced Pavement Distress and Preservation Options.Chapter 4 – Assessment Of Pavement Distress and Condition Data.Chapter 5 – Pavement Data Processing and Analyses.
