At CrossFit Golden Valkyrie, whether you’re just starting your fitness journey or looking to enhance your results, a well-rounded fitness training plan is essential for reaching your goals. To create a balanced routine, incorporate these five key elements into your fitness training program:
1. Aerobic Fitness
Aerobic activity, also known as cardio, forms the foundation of most fitness training programs. It boosts your heart rate and lung capacity, improving how efficiently your body delivers oxygen throughout. This makes everyday physical tasks feel easier and supports overall cardiovascular health. Aerobic exercises include:
-
Walking
-
Jogging
-
Biking
-
Swimming
-
Dancing
-
Water aerobics
-
Leaf raking or snow shoveling
-
Vacuuming
The Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week. To optimize weight loss or maintain a healthy weight, aim for 300 minutes weekly. For those looking for more intense options, consider HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training), which alternates short bursts of intense activity with recovery periods.
2. Strength Training
Strength training is a crucial part of any fitness training plan. It increases muscle mass, bone density, and metabolic rate, helping with weight management and overall strength. Aim for full-body strength exercises at least twice a week. You don’t need a gym membership—handheld weights, resistance bands, or even bodyweight exercises like push-ups and squats work wonders.
3. Core Exercises
Core strength is key for a well-rounded fitness training program. The muscles in your abdomen, lower back, and pelvis stabilize your spine and help connect upper and lower body movements. Include exercises like planks, sit-ups, and bridges to enhance core strength. A strong core improves posture and reduces the risk of back pain.
4. Balance Training
Balance exercises are vital for stability at any age, particularly as we age. Improved balance can prevent falls and help maintain independence. Activities like standing on one leg or practicing tai chi are excellent for enhancing balance. At CrossFit Golden Valkyrie, we emphasize balance as part of our comprehensive fitness training approach to keep you steady and strong.
5. Flexibility and Stretching
Flexibility is another key aspect of physical fitness. Regular stretching improves flexibility, increases the range of motion, and supports better posture. Stretching also reduces muscle tension and can alleviate stress. After exercise is the ideal time to stretch, holding each stretch for at least 30 seconds. Incorporate yoga or other stretching routines into your weekly plan to stay limber.
